16-year-old Erynn Johns and her family were enjoying an afternoon on Nantucket Island when things took a dark turn. She and her Marine father, Derrick, were splashing a few feet off the coast and taking pictures with their GoPro camera -- it was the perfect day. But then they started to feel a strange force pulling them out to sea. They were trapped in a rip current! After what seemed like hours of trying to swim back to shore, Erynn was out of energy and floundering. This could've easily been the end of her life. Then Dad had a brilliant idea!
He used a simple tool that helped with their videoing minutes earlier to pull Erynn closer. He wasn't going to let his daughter pass away feet from his grasp. Fortunately, Mom was standing by to drag Erynn all the way back to the beach -- but they weren't free from danger yet. With the help of strangers, Derrick was also pulled to safety, and the family was rushed to the hospital. Thankfully, they were released a short time later and had a full recovery. Now they're cautious when they decide to wade in the ocean. They know that without this common photography tool, their entire family could've been wiped away...
