Fallen Officer's Wife Is Heartbroken Over Loss, Then Daughters Reveal Daddy Left A "Gift"

On July 17, 2016, Police Officer Matthew Gerald was killed in the line of duty. Matthew, a policeman with the Baton Rouge Police Department, was involved in an unexpected ambush - and sadly, lost his life as a result. He left behind his loving wife Dechia, and two beautiful daughters, 9-year-old Dawclyn and 3-year-old Fynleigh.
As devastating as the loss of Matthew was for his wife and girls, only a few short days after his passing a "ray of sunshine" shown down on them. This distraught family learned of a surprise which no one knew - a discovery that would ultimately change their family, forever.
With the weight of the world on her shoulders and an extremely heavy heart, Dechia struggled to pick out the outfit she would wear to her husband's funeral. Suddenly, her 9-year-old daughter made quite an alarming comment,
"Mommy, I don't know why you're complaining - because you're pregnant."
Dechia, not believing this to be true, replied,
"Girl hush, don't say that kind of stuff."
And then, just days later and with the thought of her daughter's surprising remark still fresh in her mind, Dechia's 3-year-old made a very similar statement as well.
"Fynleigh told me the same thing. However this time, she told me that Jesus told her that there was a baby boy in my tummy."
This grieving widow was understandably consumed with the unexpected loss of her husband, and the idea that she could be pregnant was far from her thoughts. However, just one week later, the life of this family would take another unforeseen turn...
"There's no better gift that a husband could leave behind than a baby, a gift from God. There's no better gift than that."
Dechia admitted that although the special "gift" of a baby is certainly a blessing, the realization of raising this child without Matthew was extremely difficult to fathom. But, "with a higher being watching over her," as the next few weeks passed Dechia would experience some rather eye-opening occurrences - touching moments that assured her Matthew's spirit was with her.
She explained that while on the way to her very first ultrasound appointment, her and Matthew's wedding song came on the radio - a song she had not listened to in quite some time. And then, while looking at the sonogram image, she noticed what appeared to be a "wedding ring."
On March 21st - the Gerald family welcomed baby boy Falyn Matthew Gerald. Fayln was given the nickname "Baby Buttons" by the Baton Rouge Police Department, as they called his father "Buttons." Dechia admitted, "BRPD pretty much already said that, so yes, ‘Baby Buttons' it is."
In the heart-warming picture below, newborn Fayln grasps his father's wedding ring - a ring Dechia has worn around her neck since the day her husband lost his life in the line of duty.
Although we are occasionally taken down in life by unexpected tragedies - we are also often lifted by unexpected blessings as well. Share this touching story with your loved ones, and remind others of the law enforcement lives which we've lost.
