For many of us, candles are a staple in our homes. Whether you burn candles only on special occasions, or if they are a part of your day-to-day life, there are some important rules you should follow to make sure you are getting the most out of your candles. A former Yankee Candle employee shares her top tips to help make your candle-burning experience the best in can be - while preserving the life and looks of your candles until the very end.
Timing Is Everything
One of the biggest issues people run into with their candles is tunneling, which is when the middle area burns down deeper than the surrounding spaces. To prevent this, she recommends that you only burn candles when you have the time to do it properly. A candle should not be blown out until the entire surface area is melted. This keeps the top flat and even until the very end.
If for some reason you fail to follow the above rule, there is a trick to getting your candle back on track. Wrapping a piece of aluminum foil around your burning candle, the surface will melt evenly and make up for whatever tunneling already happened.
The biggest tip candle experts recommend is to snip the tip of the wick. There are several benefits to doing this, the biggest one being extending your burn time. The shorter the wick, the slower the burn. Candle wicks should always be trimmed down to 1/8 inch above the wax to work properly and without issues.
If this image on the left looks familiar, then you really need to follow the above rule. A long wick can create way too much smoke, burning the inside of the glass and staining the rim. This can really take away from the aesthetic side of candle-burning, so if you want to keep the glass clean and clear this tip is a must.
Believe it or not, nice candles can bring you joy long after the wax has melted! Preserve your favorite candle jars and use them for storing various odds and ends. Not only do they look just as nice as expensive storage jars, but no one will know they even held a candle in the first place!
