Shannen Doherty Left Unsure Of How To React After News From Doctors About Her Cancer
FaithTap Staff 5/1/2017
In March of 2015, one of the iconic celebrity stars of shows like Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed, Shannen Doherty, shared some very personal news of her breast cancer diagnosis. Since then, Shannen's Instagram account, theshando, has been her way of keeping fans posted on how she is doing in battling the disease.
With frequent photo updates of her shaved head, chemotherapy, and days spent with friends and family, it's been eye opening to see a famous star be humbled in life by a disease that knows no cure.
It's been two years now of Shannen Doherty's battle with breast cancer, and she just received more news that has left her overwhelmed...
In one of her most recent updates on theshando, Shannen shared in a round-about way that her chemotherapy and radiation therapy have helped to put the breast cancer in remission. She said:
"Moments. They Happen. Today was and is a moment. What does remission mean? I heard that word and have no idea how to react. Good news? YES. Overwhelming. YES."
The news is clearly a good thing, but as only a cancer survivor can tell you, the cancer-monkey never truly leaves your back. Shannen's honest emotions seem to suggest that even though she is glad to be out of danger now, it's still all a waiting game for what the future holds:
"As every single one of my fellow cancer family knows. the next five years is crucial. Reoccurrences happen all the time. Many of you have shared that very story with me. So with a heart that is certainly lighter, I wait."
The best course of action in Shannen's opinion, is to focus on the tasks at hand and to look at decisions that are under her control. This means:
"In the meantime, decisions. Reconstruction which is several surgeries. Decision on taking a pill for the next five years that comes with its own set of problems and side effects. I am blessed, I know that. But for now ... remission. I'm going to just breathe."
One foot in front of the other is the first step to running a marathon or climbing mountains, and in this case, it will be one day at a time of doing the right things to hopefully achieve a cancer free future.
According to the American Cancer Society, the odds of recurrence depends on the type of cancer and the individual, but in all cases, eating right, exercising, and keeping up with the medicines and your cancer care team increases the possibilities of a positive outcome in the long run.
Shannen has done a great deal for the advocacy of cancer since her diagnosis via her Instagram account, and also by participating with various cancer organizations. It certainly seems natural for someone in her position of fame to use popularity to get people talking about a disease that affects us all.
Modern medicine has indeed come a long way and the chances of beating breast cancer are better now than they have ever been. As Shannen plays the waiting game like thousands of other cancer patients, we hope that she is able to stay positive and always focus on the bright side of the coin.
