When it comes to celebrity life, the perfection that we see on TV and in magazines often overshadows many of the perils that even famous people experience once the cameras stop rolling.
Especially when it comes to matter of the health, no amount of money or fame can shield someone from the suffering that comes with chronic and fatal diseases.
Over the past few years, we've seen celebrities with cancer, depression, and other life threatening diseases speak out about their struggles instead of silently suffering behind closed doors.
One such celebrity is choosing to finally open up about a serious health condition that he has had for almost two decades. We speak of course, of the beloved actor and comedian Alec Baldwin.
The Alec Baldwin that we know loves to make people laugh and keep them entertained, but behind closed doors most people aren't aware of his health struggle.
In a news story back in 2011 for the New York Times, Baldwin had revealed that he has Lyme disease, but left out any other specific information around it. Fans didn't know the extent of how it affected his health and just how debilitating the symptoms would get for him.
Recently however, Alec not only participated in a fundraiser in California called LymeAid, but also spoke out about just how bad his worse days with the disease have been.
The 59-year-old actor, spoke at the event and shared that it's been 17 years that he has lived with this painful disease:
"I got the classic Lyme disease (symptoms) for each successive summer, for five years, every August, like this black lung, flu-like symptoms, sweating to death in my bed ... The first time was the worst of all and I really thought this is it, I'm not going to live."
It was unbelievable to hear Alec speak so candidly about his suffering, especially since looking back at his career, it is impossible to point out any moments where he showed that suffering on the screen or in public.
The toughest years were when he was divorced from Kim Basinger and hadn't yet met his current wife Hilaria Baldwin. Alec recalls:
"I was alone, I wasn't married at the time, I was divorced from my first wife. I was lying in bed saying, ‘I'm going to die of Lyme disease,' in my bed and ‘I hope someone finds me and I'm not here for too long.'"
True to his words, Alec has spoken out and shared that the disease terrifies him and he doesn't want his children to become a victim of this disease which is spread through the bite of deer ticks.
"I want my kids to grow up riding horses and bikes and enjoying themselves every day and not have to spend every day with us going over them with a magnifying glass to make sure they don't have any ticks on their body or their dogs, but that is part of the lifestyle of where I live."
The very timely LymeAid fundraiser hosted by the Bay Area Lyme Foundation, hopes that this summer season, people are more vigilant about checking for ticks after spending time in the outdoors. The disease can be easily prevented by wearing tick repellent and covering any exposed skin with clothing.
For those who find that they are bitten by an infected tick, antibiotics are available as a cure if the bite is caught in time. For others, like Alec, if the bite goes unnoticed the long term suffering includes severe joint pain and infections in the heart and nervous system.
Kudos to Alec Baldwin for taking the time to spread the word about the disease by revealing some very personal struggles he has experienced first hand!
