Most of us don't know the name Jack Benny, but back in his day he was perhaps just as famous as some of the comedians that we have grown to love today. Born on Valentine's day, February 14, 1894, one could say that Jack Benny was a pure romantic at heart.
Despite of being a celebrity that frequently made appearances on the stage, radio, and television, Jack was mostly a shy person. Especially when it came to the ladies, Jack wasn't exactly an extrovert. So when a fellow studio artist named Sadie caught his eye, he had to find a way to get her attention and ask her on a date.
While most guys would have just found the courage to go say hello or have a mutual friend make introductions, Jack did something totally out of the ordinary!
He started having a single red rose stem delivered to Sadie at the studio. The flower came with no message or card though, and eventually Sadie had to do some digging and ask the florist who exactly was placing these orders. Jack was revealed and the two hit it off instantly.
Sadie, who was also a fellow comedian, eventually adopted the name Mary Livingston. The entire time that Jack courted Mary, he continued having a single red rose sent to her everyday. The duo later got engaged and Mary assumed that the flowers would stop making their daily appearance.
But of course she was wrong. The single stem of red rose continued to be her present from Jack every single day that they were engaged, and later married in 1927.
Mary and Jack remained married for decades and raised a family. Throughout this time - you guessed it - Jack never stopped sending Mary the red rose! His love for her was unwavering no matter how much time passed.
The duo lived many happy years together until in 1970's when Jack was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer which eventually took his life in 1974. For Mary, the loss was too much to bear! Sources say she was inconsolable.
The day after the funeral however, Mary received the biggest surprise of her life when a red rose was delivered to her door yet again. The practice continued for a few more days which eventually made her go to the florist and ask him that he need not keep up Jack's habit.
To Mary's surprise, this is what the florist had to say:
"Mrs. Benny, you don't understand. Jack made provisions years ago to provide you a single red rose every day you are alive."
Jack's love for his wife transcended death. Mary continued to receive a red rose for another 8 years until her death!
While most of us are happy when a dozen roses make their appearance once a year on either a birthday or a special anniversary, Jack and Mary's story seems so charmingly old school and romantic!
A single red rose was how Jack first showed his admiration for Mary, and this simple yet dedicated gesture became a token of his devotion and love to Mary for the rest of her life!
