After Months of Silence, Cake Boss Star Left Crushed After Heartbreak Strikes On His Family

Fans of Cake Boss love watching main man Buddy Valastro, 40, and his team at Carlos Bakery whip up incredibly creative and memorable cake creations. They also admire how the hit TV star has a strong family support system and is still dedicated to his mom.
But sadly, his mom Mary, 69, has passed away. Buddy rushed back to New Jersey to be by his family's side. Mary had valiantly battled ALS for eight years, a neurodegenerative disease that impacts the nerves in the brain and spinal cord.
ALS slowly robs a person of their ability to move, speak and even swallow. Sometimes, the lungs are impacted and patients must be put on a ventilator in order to live.
Buddy and his sisters gathered around their mom to support her and be there as she slipped away. While Mary's condition had been steadily worsening, her passing wasn't sudden, but still "extremely heartbreaking for the family."
Buddy informed his fans about his loss on social media.
"This is a difficult time for all of us and I do ask for your patience and respect while we let this sink in. Her battle with ALS has ended, she is no longer suffering and I hope she's dancing to ‘I Will Survive' with my dad right now."
Buddy launched the Mama Mary Foundation to generate money for those affected by ALS and to help raise awareness of the disease. Several years ago, Buddy participated in the wildly popular Ice Bucket Challenge that helped raise awareness for those with Lou Gehrig's.
"The worst part about ALS is that one day you're able to brush your teeth, then you'll never be able to brush your teeth again. One day you're able to walk - you're never going to walk again. I've seen the most independent, lively person that I've ever met in my life - I mean, she was just like a ball of energy - reduced to not being able to do anything for herself. And I think that's the part that kills her the most because she was the matriarch. She did so many things for everyone."
Buddy, his wife Lisa, and their four children will continue to keep his mother's memory alive through the foundation. Almost 250,000 fans have liked his Instagram post and hundreds have commented.
Our hearts go out to everyone suffering from ALS. Our prayers also go out to Buddy Valastro and his family.
