After landing a big payday, some professional athletes splurge and buy yachts or fancy cars. But not Derek Carr. He has a surprising plan for his money that's warming people's hearts.
Derek not only is the talented and highly respected quarterback for the Oakland Raiders, but he's also a modest man with an incredibly humble approach to life despite being worth millions. In fact, he just signed the most lucrative contract ever awarded in NFL history.
The contract extension gives Derek $125 million for five years with a guaranteed $40 million, $70 million in total guarantees and a $12.5 million signing bonus. He played football at Fresno State and was drafted in 2014. His older brother David also happened to be an NFL quarterback and played at Fresno State, too. Their uncle also played for the Raiders.
But it's not the money that Derek focuses on. He loves the game, truly loves the sport. He also feels it is his calling to help others.
When asked in an interview about his plans for the money, Derek said:
"The first thing I'll do is pay my tithe like I have since I was in college giving $700 on a scholarship check. That won't change."
Derek also plans to purchase something special for his wife, although she always asks him not to, he said. He also plans to treat his family to dinner at Chick-fil-A. But he also intends to put his money to good use for the benefit of others.
"The exciting thing for me money-wise, honestly, is that this money is going to help a lot of people. I'm very thankful to have it, that it's in our hands, because it's not only going to help a lot of people in this country but a lot of people around the world."

The star football player is known for his morality, strong character and compassion. He consistently puts God, church and his family first. He supports a variety of causes and travels on mission trips helping others.
This face of the Raiders will be moving to Las Vegas in the future as the team finishes out their 2017 and 2018 seasons in Oakland. May Derek continue to be a blessing to others as he uses his God-given talents on the football field and shares the rewards he reaps.
