When tragedy strikes, good Samaritans often respond, compelled by a deep-rooted sense of the right thing to do. But when a horrific accident occurred in Minooka, Illinois, the heroes who emerged from the rubble surprised everyone.
When 23-year-old Jacob Kaminiski of Marseilles decided to presumably drink and drive, he not only put his life at risk, but also the lives of others, including 27-year-old pregnant mom Alexis Danley of Shorewood. Alexis was six months pregnant and traveling with her one-year-old when her car was involved in a terrible accident allegedly caused by Kaminiski, sheriff's deputies say.
The mom's car was smoking following the impact of the crash. Fortunately, two young high school seniors were headed home to Channahon when they came across the wreckage.
They sprinted to the scene to see if they could help. While some people might balk at helping save a life, choosing instead to wait for officials to arrive, these teens opted to dive into the car through a broken window, which has caught the world's attention.
Hunter Hasenjaeger said he and his friend Collin Barry were in shock when they got close to the crash site. However, they both knew they had to rescue the baby, which they heard screaming and crying inside the vehicle.
That's when they jumped into action, using a cellphone as a flashlight to see.
"The mom's hand was on the baby seat. So I kind of had to move her hand and pull the baby closer and unstrap it."
Hunter said they were upset that they couldn't help save Alexis' life. But their bravery ultimately resulted in the baby having the chance to live. In the end, they were truly heroes.
"It made me feel good that we saved the baby, because, who knows what could have happened?"
The teens said what they witnessed at the crash site angered them and that the alleged drunk driver was "selfish" for robbing an innocent child of her mother. They both said they hope this sad story serves as a warning to those who think about drinking and driving.
The moment the baby was safely in their arms, they snapped the picture that eventually went viral to show the surviving family that the baby was okay.
Here's more about this heartbreaking story and the surprising heroes.
God calls people to help others, which is exactly what these two teens did. While they can never unsee the trauma they witnessed at the crash site, they can seek solace in the fact that they saved the life of a helpless baby. Jacob has since been cited by the county sheriff's office with drunk driving, disobeying a no passing zone and drug possession.
