A beach vacation is a quintessential getaway for many families during the summer season. It's the type of destination that is relaxing, easy, and can keep all members of the family happy and occupied!
While no one expects their time at the beach to yield anything but a nice tan and happy memories, there are a few ways to ruin the fun if not careful; since the two most present dangers are quite literally impossible to escape - we speak of course of the sun and the water.
Finding out first hand about this is Roberta Ursrey and her family, who recently planned a vacation off of Florida's gulf coast to enjoy the beautiful and lively Panama City beach.
Roberta had just walked out of the water, when she noticed that her two sons seemed further away in the ocean than she liked. Roberta immediately tried to get their attention to ask them to come closer to the shore.
Turns out, her sons had already realized the danger and were attempting to get back to beach, but a rip current kept pulling them back in.
"They were screaming and crying that they were stuck. People were saying, ‘Don't go out there.' ... I honestly thought I was going to lose my family that day. It was like, ‘Oh God, this is how I'm going."
But being a mother, nothing was exactly what Roberta couldn't do. She instantly started swimming towards her kids in an attempt to rescue them.
It didn't take long for others to notice the screams as well. About 15 people including her two sons seemed to be caught in this life or death situation, unable to escape the strong currents in the water. One by one Roberta's family started following behind to help her pull out the kids, but it all seemed so futile against the ocean.
Then came the strangers including Tabatha Monroe, and Jessica and Derek Simmons, who weren't ready to see a family drown without doing everything in their power to save them. Jessica, who considers herself an excellent swimmer, remembers being so tired trying to fight the waves, but she wasn't giving up, and nor were other strangers:
"It was the most remarkable thing to see. These people who don't even know each other and they trust each other that much to get them to safety."
Eventually, Jessica and Derek, along with about 80 other beach goers formed a human chain, which helped rescue Roberta, her sons, her mother-in-law, and others who surely would have lost their lives if not.
For Roberta, there weren't enough words to thank what strangers had done for her family:
"I am so grateful. These people were God's angels that were in the right place at the right time. I owe my life and my family's life to them. Without them, we wouldn't be here."
Jessica, who didn't think twice about putting her own life in danger to save others, was too humble to consider herself a hero. For her, the more remarkable thing was how everyone came together in the moment of need:
"It's so cool to see how we have our own lives and we're constantly at a fast pace, but when somebody needs help, everybody drops everything and helps. That was really inspiring to see that we still have that. With everything going on in the world, we still have humanity."
Here is the remarkable footage of the human chain that has gone viral.
Most people are really good about slathering on sunblock to keep themselves and their families safe, but not too many folks stop and consider the dangers of rip tides. Hopefully, Roberta's story will provide the necessary reminder to be safe during your next beach vacation and like Jessica, always be on the look out to make sure others are doing the same too!
