For too long, being skinny has been the necessary variable in being seen as beautiful; while the notion is not completely out of vogue, social media is helping turn the beauty definition upside down. More and more people are sharing their personal stories to encourage an honest dialogue of what they really believe to be beautiful, unhindered by what they see on glossy magazine covers.
One such story of a husband about his wife is getting a lot of attention. Robbie Tripp is happily married to a woman named Sarah; and one thing that is clear from Robbie's Instagram feed is that the couple loves to travel and are head over heels in love!
On a recent beach vacation, Robbie shared a picture of him and Sarah along with a heartfelt note on just why he loves her so much.
Robbie's post is as much a love letter as a declaration of being a feminist, and this is why...
Robbie begins by recalling how he was teased by friends for liking women who didn't quite fit the traditional beauty definition:
"I love this woman and her curvy body. As a teenager, I was often teased by my friends for my attraction to girls on the thicker side, ones who were shorter and curvier, girls that the average (basic) bro might refer to as "chubby" or even "fat."
As he got older though, he chose not to listen to those friends and instead build his own view on how much the media had meddled with what beauty should mean:
"Then, as I became a man and started to educate myself on issues such as feminism and how the media marginalizes women by portraying a very narrow and very specific standard of beauty (thin, tall, lean) I realized how many men have bought into that lie."
Then speaking about Sarah, Robbie makes himself known as the luckiest man alive:
"For me, there is nothing sexier than this woman right here ... Her shape and size won't be the one featured on the cover of Cosmopolitan but it's the one featured in my life and in my heart. There's nothing sexier to me than a woman who is both curvy and confident; this gorgeous girl I married fills out every inch of her jeans and is still the most beautiful one in the room."
Robbie takes it a step further giving some advice to the guys and girls who are looking for their own soul mates:
"Guys, rethink what society has told you that you should desire. A real woman is not a ... bikini mannequin or a movie character. She's real. She has beautiful stretch marks on her hips and cute little dimples on her booty. Girls, don't ever fool yourself by thinking you have to fit a certain mold to be loved and appreciated. There is a guy out there who is going to celebrate you for exactly who you are, someone who will love you like I love my Sarah."
Sarah Tripp, who is 25, was smitten by her husband's declaration of love and later told TODAY how she too is incredibly lucky to have found him:
"He always makes me feel so loved and appreciated. As a body-positive fashion blogger, I've been very open about my body love journey and my goal to help other curvy women learn to love their body. I just feel so lucky that I have a husband who has loved every inch of me since the day we met."
Robbie hadn't expected his simple post to create such a buzz, but after being liked over 34,000 times, he was happy to see that more people share his view:
"My favorite part has been seeing all the guys tagging their girlfriend or wife and saying, 'This is what I tell you all the time! I love your curvy body!' It's awesome to see all these couples joining us in breaking down society's beauty myth that women have to be a certain size or a certain shape to be considered sexy."
Robbie and Sarah live in San Francisco, where Sarah works as a body positive fashion blogger.
