Jimmy Fallon Fans Devastated, After Heartbreaking News Puts ‘Tonight Show' On Hold
world by Joshua Patton 11/7/2017
Whether watching before bedtime or on the internet the next day, millions of Americans enjoy The Tonight Show with its affable host, Jimmy Fallon. On Friday, with no warning, the host abruptly canceled the show and then all the tapings scheduled for the following week.
Even though the showbiz axiom is "the show must go on," there are exceptions - and in this case, one every audience or performer would understand. Jimmy had to go to say goodbye to his Mom.
From his days at Saturday Night Live to his current stint as the host of the original late-night talk show, Jimmy's mother Gloria Fallon has been one of his biggest fans. As we all saw during his very first monologue as the host of the show, he's her biggest fan as well.
However, at age 68, Gloria went to her final rest, and in canceling the taping Jimmy was able to be at her side when she did. He's taking the rest of this week to be with his family and mourn the loss of a great woman.
While she may not have appeared much on the show, Jimmy and his guests often talked about her with affection.
In 2016, he told a story about how his mother was invited to share a recipe for a special issue of Bon Appetit magazine. Gloria panicked, and asked which recipe she should use, settling on her cheesecake recipe. When the magazine's editors made it and taste-tested they raved about it. Jimmy asked her where this recipe came from, and after hearing her rustling through papers she told him:
"I got it out of Bon Appetit magazine."
One of the guests who told a story about Gloria on the air was comic actor Danny DeVito.
While telling a story about working with Robert DeNiro in the film The Comedian, Danny brought up a time when he was at a play starring the famous actor at the same time as Jimmy and Gloria.
Gloria brought some Altoids and was rustling the wax paper inside the tin during a very quiet scene. When Danny mentioned it, Jimmy asked, surprised, if he heard the sound during the play.
He replied, deadpan:
"Everybody heard it!"
He quickly added that she was very nice. Tom Hanks's son Colin also met Gloria and found her equally memorable. And the list goes on and on... Gloria was no doubt an amazing woman.
Late night comedy can be a very snarky and mean environment, even if that's sometimes funny. However, Jimmy Fallon is known for being enthusiastic, kind, and warm, all qualities he credits to his mom. That's a legacy any mom can be proud of.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jimmy and his family during this difficult time.
