Military Mom Sends Care Packages To Her Sons, Then Learns What Other Servicemen Are Getting

LeAnn Boudwine of Hartford, Wisconsin is the mother of two sons who serve in the military. Like many military moms, she wanted her sons to know how much she was thinking about them when they were deployed overseas, so she started sending them care packages.
But when her sons told her what other soldiers were receiving, she just couldn't believe it.
What LeAnn discovered was that many of her sons' fellow soldiers weren't receiving anything at all from home. It's not that no one cared about these men and women who were dedicated to serving their country, it was just that so many military families are on such tight budgets that they can't afford to send packages to their loved ones overseas.
When LeAnn heard that, she just knew she had to act.
LeAnn decided to start a nonprofit organization called Support the Troops WI with a mission to send care packages to military men and women who are deployed around the world. The organization solicits donations by publishing a "wish list" of items such as granola bars, canned fruit, deodorant, gel insoles, socks, lip balm, card games and prepaid international phone cards.
Anyone wishing to donate items can leave them at drop sites conveniently located around town. Then the items are boxed by volunteers and shipped overseas.
One man, who is a former member of the military himself, described why he brought his young sons to help in this effort. He told TMJ4 News,
"To understand where their freedom is coming from. To understand that we need to support them because they are over there fighting for us."
LeAnn started her nonprofit organization in 2007, and just recently she reached a major milestone. Support the Troops WI just packed and shipped its 10,000th care package.
Even though spearheading an effort to pack and ship 10,000 care packages for members of the military is an accomplishment to be proud of, LeAnn has no plans to quit any time soon. As she told TMJ4 in Milwaukee,
