Kensington Palace Admits The Heartbreaking Reason Harry And Meghan Are Rushing To Get Married

While royal engagements typically are shorter in nature, there’s a reason why Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle are hurrying off to the altar. It’s actually quite sweet and simultaneously heartbreaking.
After publicly announcing their engagement, Kensington Palace confirmed that the couple planned to be married in May 2018. That leaves them just six months to piece together an elaborate royal wedding.
"This is really whirlwind by royal standards."
A six-month engagement for the couple isn't too much shorter than Prince William’s with Duchess Kate. Although, the duke and duchess knew each other for approximately five years before they tied the knot, whereas Prince Harry and Meghan have known each other for only two years.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle plan to wed at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle where Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip reside. Prince Harry wanted a different venue than his brother and to have it be smaller and more intimate; it holds 800 people.
It’s also closer to his dear 96-year-old grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, to whom Prince Harry is close, notes Kate Nicholl, royal expert. The duke announced his retirement from royal duties recently and has been taking it easy.
In fact, Prince Harry has taken over a considerable amount of the duke’s royal duties, including acting as head of the Royal Marines. That’s a role Prince Harry has embraced considering his own military background.
"He wanted something close to home for the Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen … and Prince Harry really wants him to be at his wedding."
Having both of his grandparents at their wedding would mean the world to Prince Harry. Their venue also holds special meaning for him.
The prince spent a considerable amount of his childhood there and attended school there. He shares memories and special moments as an adult with his grandparents there.
It’s also where Meghan first got to know the queen. Plus, it's where Prince Harry was christened as a baby.
Now that the date has been set for this cute couple to wed, royal watchers can now ponder what her spectacular dress will look like, what colors they will use and who will be honored to appear in the bridal party.
