Stranger Can't Help But Notice Homeless Man On Train

Although we've been told since we were kids that it's a big no-no, many of us are guilty of doing this one particular thing. No one wants to openly admit to having these thoughts because it's rather shameful. But, before we know what's happening, we find ourselves judging other people based on what our eyes see.
We've been taught that first impressions count, but this doesn't apply to all situations. A homeless person isn't going to be on anyone's best-dressed list or be able to put his best foot forward, especially if they don't even have any shoes on their feet. Yet, some folks will stop and stare at a homeless person just because they can.
That's exactly what Jessica Bell witnessed on a recent commute home. She noticed a young man enter the train car, and after eyeballing the homeless guy sitting across from her, he acted out in a way that left all the passengers speechless.
Jessica was headed home on the CTA Red Line in Chicago when she spotted an older, weathered-looking homeless man sitting across from her. He was minding his own business, but it was hard not to notice what he was wearing, or lackthereof. On Facebook, she said:
"His feet are so swollen he's wearing the tattered gym shoes he has with the back folded down; like slip-ons. I don't know how many pairs of socks he's wearing in an attempt to keep his feet warm but there is blood seeping through."
The sight alone was enough to make anyone feel for the poor man. Walking around during Chicago's snowy winter season with cold, cracked feet had to be very painful!
On the other side of the the doors was a much younger man, who seemed to be the complete opposite - he was carrying a satchel and a suitcase, and was wearing cozy warm boots.
"He's wearing a pair of big black snow boots. They look new; they look expensive; they're built for a Chicago winter. Quietly, in a blink and you'll miss it fashion, the younger man takes off the boots he's wearing and passes them to the old man. He opens his suitcase and gives him a pair of socks as well."
The younger guy then reached into his suitcase and put on a different pair of shoes. This man literally gave someone else the shoes off his feet! Had the homeless man needed a top, he almost certainly would have taken the shirt off his back, too.
"Those of us who are close enough to see and hear the exchange are floored."
Jessica she says the shoes from the suitcase would have fit the homeless man just as well as the more expensive winter boots. However, the boots were exactly what the older man needed, and everyone could instantly see just how special this kindhearted stranger truly was.
Facebook/Love What Matters
Shortly after the exchange Jessica said a prayer, which was posted to Love What Matters on Facebook.
"I pray that we all are compelled to do similar. I pray that we all allow empathy to invoke action. I pray that we never forget that we have always had the power to be a blessing."
Although the news media have us all believing that the world is filled with hate and apathy, the daily actions of everyday heroes almost always go unnoticed. These instances of love and compassion happen more often than we think, and it's only through the sharing of these stories that we can begin to change our thoughts about the world we live in.
