When you hear of family musical groups, images of lederhosen, unique songs and big smiles come into mind. But when one Welsh mother named Mel decided to audition for Britain's Got Talent with her 15-year-old son, Jamie, the old notions of a "family band" went flying out the window.
None of the judges were prepared for such a beautiful, emotionally raw performance from these two!
Before jumping into their rendition of "Say Something" by A Great Big World, Mel told the judges that this was the moment she dreamed of years ago.
"To perform onstage with my son is going to be one of the proudest moments of my life."
After listening to their backstory, everyone in the audience was ready to hear them sing. The judges wished them well and watched eagerly as the background music clicked on. It was now or never for Jamie and his mom!
They felt comfortable on the stage and confident in their months of preparation. It was clear to everyone sitting in the theater that their hard work paid off. Jamie's impressive vocals rang through the theater as Mel sang more of a backup. Even though they were a duet, Mel wanted to let her son's talent shine!
As soon as the pair wrapped up "Say Something," Simon commented:
"You were very cool in the way that you let Jamie take the lead. You allowed it to be his song, but your harmonies actually improved the song, I thought."
The 44-year-old mother told WalesOnline that her biggest fear was that people would think she used her son for stardom! With a brief career in the music industry years ago, it would be easy for people to assume the worst. Thankfully, her true intentions were plain to see!
"I'd pretty much given up. I just thought I'm in my 40s, this is never going to happen for me. I was worried Simon would have a go at me for using my son to re-launch my own career, but he didn't do that at all. I think he could see it was genuine and I just wanted Jamie to shine."
Not only did Jamie's skill shine through during their duet, but Mel's obvious love as a mother was just as visible. They are a great family and the perfect vocal complement to one another.
