An important part of any relationship is the ability to joke around with one another. Laughter is the best medicine and it can do wonders for a marriage. Thankfully, humor was one of Phedre and Nigel Fitton's strong suits!
The loving couple met when they were just teenagers and remained married until Phedre was 69 years old. Unfortunately, that's when cancer took her life and Nigel was left alone, heartbroken and without his best friend. It wasn't until several years after her passing when Nigel realized there was still one last joke between the two of them...
Phedre's exciting sense of humor was one of the things that drew Nigel to her in the first place. They spent decades together, laughing through life's silly moments and leaning on each other during the dark ones. So when doctors diagnosed Phedre with cancer, Nigel and the rest of their family was heartbroken.
Unfortunately, after five years of battling with all her might, Phedre passed away in 2013.
But just before she passed, Phedre asked her doting husband to take care of an important task. He had no idea she was playing one last trick on him!
Their daughter, Antonia, shared how her father discovered her mother's silly joke:
"Before my mum passed away, she gave my dad strict instructions to water the plants in the bathroom.
He's been religiously watering them and keeping them alive..."
"They look so amazing he decided to take them to his new home, only to discover they are plastic! Can hear my mum chuckling."
It wasn't until Nigel packed up the home he shared with Phedre in South Africa to move to his new place in Hawaii that he realized what was going on. He had been watering fake plants for years!
Everyone in the family burst out laughing when Nigel admitted the truth. It was quintessential Phedre and they weren't surprised!
"When my dad found out that he'd been watering plastic plants for years, it was so funny for all of us and made us feel like she was still with us."
Even on her darkest day, Phedre made sure to have a sense of humor and keep Nigel on his toes. This is the perfect example of true love from beyond the grave!
