4 Yrs After Heartbreaking Loss Robin Williams Daughter Makes 1 Request To Fans In Honor Of Dad
Kristin Danley 7/28/2018
Summertime is a crushingly difficult time for Zelda Williams, daughter of comedian and actor Robin Williams. Robin's birthday fell on July 21 and the anniversary of his passing painfully occurs on Aug. 11.
Zelda, also an actress, decided to recognize her father's birthday on social media, even though it was hard for her to do. She also wanted to increase awareness of the signs of depression and the disease from which he suffered.
Robin passed away in 2014 at the age of 63. Zelda wrote that anyone who has ever dealt with the loss of a loved one understands how heartbreaking certain anniversaries can be.
Special memories surface at these times, making it hard to breathe. Zelda confessed that she struggles on her dad's birthday and the anniversary of his passing, but everyone's kindness helps her power through -- even though it's hard for her to read everyone's comments.
"For all the internet’s good intentions in expressing to me their fondness for dad, it’s very overwhelming to have strangers need me to know how much they cared for him right now. It’s harder still to be expected to reach back. So while I’ve got the strength, consider this my one open-armed response, before I go take my yearly me time to celebrate his and my birthdays in peace."
Zelda wanted all of her dad's adoring fans to realize that there are things they can do in their own lives to celebrate her father. They also can channel their inner Robin Williams and make the world a brighter place.
"If you’d like to do something in his honor, volunteer at your local homeless shelter, or look up how to make homeless aid backpacks. Give one in his name. He’d have loved that ... Mostly, try to spread some laughter and kindness around. And creatively swear a lot. Everytime you do, somewhere out there in our vast weird universe, he’s giggling with you ... or giving a particularly fat bumblebee its wings."
Her post also thanked her father's fans and followers for loving him, and for suppporting him and his life's works. She also thanked everyone for missing him, just like she does.
Zelda has two brothers, one older and one younger. After their father's passing, they agreed that the world grew a little grayer without his infectious smile.
Robin's second wife Susan had stated publicly that her husband's battle with Lewy body dementia, a debilitating brain disease, had proved to be too much for the man who was a bright light to others even on his darkest days. Depression is one of numerous symptoms that accompany Lewy body dementia.
