Man Makes Comment To Elderly Man About Roses Regretting It Instantly When He Bursts Into Tears

Life often throws us a curveball when we least expect it. But it's how we respond to what's being tossed at us that just might make all the difference in the world.
Gregory Johnson learned this life lesson when he hustled into the local Kroger's to grab a few snacks before rushing home and settling in to watch the big Major League Baseball all star game. While waiting in line at the deli counter, he noticed a senior citizen nearby in an electric scooter.
The man had selected the most beautiful bouqet of fragrant red roses bursting with color, along with a delicious looking birthday cake. Gregory couldn't help but comment on the man's goodies in the basket.
"It looks like you've got a big night planned!"

The elderly man turned toward Gregory, but instead of beaming with excitement, the saddest look flittered across his face. His eyes were filled with sorrow.
“You know how there are moments in life where it literally feels as if your heart is breaking in two as tears attempt to flood your eyes? He was trying not to cry anymore than he had been. I put my hand on his shoulder and tried to comfort him and his broken heart.”
The man named Jim explained to Gregory -- a complete stranger -- that his beloved wife Gloria had passed away five years ago and today was her birthday. Every year since her passing, Jim bought his wife roses and a birthday cake.
"He would put the roses on the table when he got home and cut them both a piece of birthday cake."
Gloria and Jim had a lifelong love that lasted through the decades. They had been joyfully married for 53 years.
The couple first met as teenagers attending rival high schools. Jim played basketball while Gloria was a cheerleader for the other team he played against one night.
Even though Jim approached Gloria after his team won the sectional semi-finals to see if she'd root for him at their next game, she flatly turned him down. She curtly informed Jim that she would never cheer for any other school but hers and she had better things to do than watch him play.
Jim described Gloria as a firecracker after she quickly stormed out of the gym. He didn't think he'd ever see her again until that very next night she showed up to watch him play.
His team won and they'd been together ever since. Gregory couldn't believe their romantic love story and it seemed that Jim really needed to tell it to someone that day.
“Sometimes in life all we really need to do is to listen to someone, and genuinely care about what they are saying to us."
Gregory stood with Jim listening to him retale his love story for at least an hour. There was no way he was going to see the start of the ballgame and he honestly didn't care at this point.
"Jim needed a friend to talk to… and ultimately I guess I did as well! Life is all about connecting with others and perhaps finding a way to make their day a little bit brighter."
The store manager eventually approached the men and snapped a photo of Jim for the bulletin board. Every year, they take Jim's photo to honor Gloria and this year, he wasn't alone in the picture.
He had Gregory...

Instead of remembering his wife Gloria with such heartache, he beamed as he talked about her to Gregory. When the elderly man asked a personal question of Gregory, he knew what his answer would be, even though he was still thinking about the baseball game that now seemed so insignificant.
“Would you have a few minutes to stop by and have a piece of cake with me as I put Gloria’s roses in their usual place on my kitchen table?”
Gregory told Jim he'd be honored to sit at his table and share a piece of cake in remembrance of Gloria. Baseball game? What baseball game.
These two men became fast friends over a bouquet of roses, a birthday cake and memories of a wonderful wife. Gregory admitted that he was pretty sure he put a little pep in Jim's night, and he knew the other man made his night unforgettable.
It's amazing what a few words spoken out of kindness can do for another person. What a beautiful story!
