Abby shone on stage after learning the back story behind the lyrics from none other than Kelly herself. Abby is 17 and Kelly was 16 when she penned the song, Kelly told USA Today.
"It literally just started as a poetry kind of thing because I just needed to get it out and my mom was like 'you are very angry about something, you should start writing.' I wanted this song to sound different when I was recording it because, when I was writing it, I had different intent. Abby is singing this song how I wish I would have sang it in the beginning. I saw my mom break. You watch that and as a child you don't know how to help."
The lyrics are a direct reflection of growing up in a broken home, Kelly explained. They are both gut-wrenching and sincere.
"Because of you, I never stray too far from the sidewalk. Because of you, I learned to play on the safe side so I don't get hurt. I find it hard to trust not only me, but everyone around me. Because of you I am afraid I lose my way and it's not too long before you point it out. I cannot cry because I know that's weakness in your eyes. I'm forced to fake a smile, a laugh everyday of my life. My heart can't possibly break when it wasn't even whole to start with."
Abby used Kelly's song in her battle against Claire DeJean who sang Shawn Mendes' "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back." Both artists gave a strong performance, but Abby's emotional performance prompted Kelly to grow emotional.
Even judge Jennifer Hudson complimented Abby. Fellow judge Adam Levine agreed that it was a terrific audition.
Even though both female singers were stunning, Kelly had to pick one. In the end, Abby prevailed.
