Marianna Zappi is tougher than she looks at first glance. Through the bubbly exterior and warm smile is a soul who's gone through more than most of us could imagine. The ambitious singer was in an abusive relationship for four years and feared that she may not make it out alive, let alone to see the day she would pursue her dream of being a superstar.
Fortunately, Marianna found the courage to leave her abusive partner and follow her destiny. Now she's bringing her sunny personality onto the X Factor stage...
Before jumping into her performance, Marianna told the judges that music was her saving grace during the darkest period in her life.
"Music was the only thing that kept me going at that time. After four years, I walked out and [went to] The Women's Trust. I am very, very lucky. For someone who was caged for so long, freedom feels like a blessing...
The tears that you see are not tears of sadness. They're tears of happiness because I feel free. The past is in the past and I shall not dwell on it anymore!"
She fought back the stream of tears flowing down her cheeks. Clearly, the memory of her previous relationship was too much to talk about in public. It was time to let her music speak for itself!
Marianna sang her heart out, pouring every bit of emotion out before the judges. She hit notes only seasoned professionals should be able to nail and looked thrilled to do it. She smiled from ear to ear and wiped away more happy tears as she saw the judges' smiles during her audition.
The moment she wrapped up, the judges dove into their critiques. Unsurprisingly, they had nothing but positive remarks. Nicole Scherzinger of The Pussycat Dolls said:
"I love you to bits. You're just awesome. I told myself I wouldn't cry and then you made me cry! It's real. You're very inspiring and I think it's awesome you're strong enough to share your story. I think a lot of women can relate to that."
Simon was next. It seemed as though Marianna's performance touched him deep down to his core.
"It was beautiful. You meant every word. I listened to every word. You have incredible passion when you sing. It meant something. It was real - and you're real. It all feels right."
Before Marianna walked out of the double doors and into her bright future, Simon brought her in for a hug. There was something about her that seemed so authentic - everyone in the room felt blessed to partake in her special moment.
