Of all the reality tv competitions out there, The Voice has to be America's favorite. Sure, it may not be the pioneering singing contest to air on the small screen, but it sure is entertaining.
The Voice isn't your typical reality TV show. For instance, contestants are judged on actual talent rather than looks. In the first round, the judges don't get to see what the contestants look like. They have their chairs turned backward and are given the option to "choose" a contestant for their team.
Makenzie Thomas was one of the many hopefuls vying for a coveted spot in the next round. She auditioned back in Season 14 but unfortunately did not make the cut. Instead of completely giving up on her dream, Makenzie took the judges' advice into heart and came back with a bang.
When 20-year-old Makenzie failed to get a chair turn in the Voice season 14, she went home in tears. She decided to sharpen her singing skills by performing in a group called "Elevated Praise". Makenzie also made it a point to practice every day. She wanted to make sure that she was better prepared for her second audition.
Sure enough, Makenzie wowed the crowd with her vocals when she auditioned with Jessie J's "Big White Room". She managed to capture the attention of judge Jennifer Hudson, who turned midway through the performance.
Under "Team JHUD", Makenzie stunned the world with her cover of "Emotion" by the Bee Gees. The classic tune is perhaps better known from the 2001 cover by Destiny's Child. Makenzie's version follows the same arrangement, with Makenzie singing Kelly, Michelle, and Beyonce's part with ease.
What made the performance even more special is Makenzie's backstory. The Wallingford, Kentucky native expressed a lot of self-doubt before auditioning for The Voice. Her insecurities are rooted in the constant bullying she received for her weight. Makenzie wants to use her talent to encourage others and spread positivity through music.
Makenzie's performance is sure to give you goosebumps all over. Even singer and fellow judge Kelly Clarkson couldn't help but admire her talent. From the way Makenzie harmonizes with the backup singers to the part where she hits the high note - it's really a spectacle from start to end! This young woman is proof that we can overcome adversity by staying true to ourselves and never backing down.
