Jason Castro won over the heart of millions during his stint on America's Got Talent. But behind the scenes, his life was far from perfect. Thankfully, God was there to guide him through the tough times and now he's proud to speak about his faith!
He shared a moving rendition of "Hallelujah" with the I Am Second team recently to honor God and thank Him for showing him the light when all he could see was darkness.
His rendition of "Hallelujah" is so full of emotion, you can't help but shed a tear or two when listening to him sing. Jason's bond with God was apparent from the very first note!
John Cale, a Velvet Underground co-founder, producer and an innovative writer-arranger, spoke to PEOPLE about how "Hallelujah" came to be. Leonard Cohen created the song and the lyrics - but he crafted them into the hit we're familiar with today.
He told PEOPLE that the song was all about poetry, real music and live instruments, even when it came to performing the track while on tour.
"I was really an admirer of his poetry. It never let you down. There's a timelessness to it. I called Leonard and asked him to send me the lyrics. Fifteen verses. It was a long roll of fax paper. And then I choose whichever ones were really me. Some of them were religious, and coming out of my mouth would have been a little difficult to believe. I choose the cheeky ones...
There were a lot of different venues and a lot of different kinds of performances. And as it turned out the ones that were best were the ones that were done on a real piano, not an electric piano. Every time we got a real Steinway, things went up a couple notches."
The attention to musical detail and call for faith was one of the reasons Jason felt so drawn to the song. He wanted to belt his heart out to Leonard's iconic track.
In the interview before his impressive performance of "Hallelujah," Jason explained his relationship with God is stronger than it's ever been.
"I always believed in God but didn't trust him with everything...Once I trusted it with him we started the godly road of living a godly life and being in community and being known. It feels good to be known... I'm able to be free... because of Jesus Christ. I'm a free man."
Without His guidance, Jason's life easily could've gone down a different path. Now, he's a happily married man with a beautiful daughter and a wonderful singing voice to boot.
