When 63-year-old John Dorroh was just a wee little boy, his mother would suddenly vanish from the family home every Christmas Eve day. His mom, Sue, would mutter something about running some important errands, grab her car keys, and then poof, she was gone! It happened without fail every single year, and John could never figure out where she went to, or why her last-minute errands couldn’t wait until after the holidays were over.
After Sue passed away in 1990, John finally discovered what she was up to all those years. The revelation came when he received a mysterious letter in the mail from a stranger named Robert, a former coworker of his mom. When he read the man’s words, John found out that the two were more than just work buddies, and Sue’s “errands” were just a ruse to hide the secret life she spent with another family.
John was always confused as to why his mother chose to run her errands on Christmas Eve. She always started her Christmas shopping in August, and was finished by Thanksgiving. Her absence became a mystery, but the family let it slide because she was always back a few hours later as promised.
However, she wasn’t shopping for a forgotten gift or making a grocery store run. She had a very special mission to complete, and it absolutely could not wait. As John read through Robert’s letter, it finally dawned on him that he had been in the presence of an angel all these years, and he couldn’t hold back the tears.
Sue Dorroh wasn’t just an average human being. This beautiful soul was was gifted with a heart so big, it could only have come straight from Heaven! Robert’s letter to John read:
“Dear Johnny, I just wanted you to know how much my family and I appreciate what your mother has done for us for all of these years. Every year on Christmas Eve day your mom comes to my house dress like Mrs. Claus and gives my kids a Christmas that we can’t afford to give them. She has given them shoes, shirts, jeans, toys, and candy.”
Every Christmas Eve for the rest of her life, Sue continued on her heartfelt mission to bring joy to Robert’s family.
“I know your heart is heavy and that you are missing Miss Sue. We do, too. We loved her and just wanted you to know what she has done for us. Love, Robert and Nellie and the kids.”
It’s hard to believe that Sue had been keeping such a precious secret to herself all that time!
John was filled with gratitude for Robert’s kind words about his mom, and he said that the sweet note was the best gift he ever received.
Even though Sue felt it necessary to keep her Christmas Eve activities to herself, John wanted to tell her story so that her love and generosity could finally be acknowledged. He wrote a short story about his “Mom’s Secret Mission,” which has now been published in “Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Joy of Christmas.” This sweet woman is finally getting all the recognition that she deserves!
Mom’s Christmas Eve secret is finally coming out of the shadows and into the light!
