Celebrities who were lucky enough to be invited to this year's 41st annual Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, D.C., were greeted with lots of love and laughter, an amazing lineup of musicians, and for those who were being honored as living legends, there was a truckload of tears. The annual event recognizes performing artists for their lifetime contributions to pop culture, which culminates in a star-studded gala every December at the Kennedy Center Opera House.
The televised show, which recently aired on CBS, saw Adam Lambert honoring Cher with a soulful ballad of "Believe," and iconic singer-songwriter Paul Simon even took to the stage to share his deep appreciation for famed composer Phillip Glass, who was also one of the honoree's for the night. But, the event wasn't actually complete until Kelly Clarkson's sang an emotional rendition of "Fancy" to Reba McEntire.
Grammy-winning Kelly is one of the best and well-known American Idol contestants of all time, but back when she was a nobody country music legend Reba McEntire was her hero. Kelly probably never would have imagined that the fiery redhead would one day become a part of her family after she married Reba's stepson, Brandon Blackstock.
But, even before they were family Kelly had stars in her eyes, and the Texas native was thrilled when she got to sing a duet of her hit single, "Because of You," with Reba in 2007.
When Kelly stepped on stage to honor Reba, who shaped her life both personally and professionally, she couldn't stop gushing like a schoolgirl:
"Sometimes when we meet our heroes, it doesn’t always pan out how you hope. But meeting Reba — being friends with her, and eventually becoming family — has been one of the highlights of my life, truly. So thank you so much for listening to me vent as an artist. Thank you so much for comforting me on the phone through my tears, like a friend. And thank you for being a really rad grandma for my kids."
Kelly went on to say how much she loved Reba and how she was the best grandma to her kids. The embarrassed singer then joked "don't judge me" right before she belting out an emotional cover of Reba's 1990 hit,"Fancy."
Reba was her usual exuberant self and couldn't hold back her smile as she watched Kelly get fancy with one of her favorite tunes. Kelly needn't have worried about being judged, because Reba jumped to her feet and gave an enthusiastic two thumbs up after the performance ended.
Of course, the country music star wasn't the only one tapping their toes to the beat! The rest of the audience also gave Kelly a standing ovation for doing such an amazing job at honoring Reba in her new role as an official pop culture icon.
