Ever seen the movie Aladdin? If you did, you may have recalled how Aladdin came across the magical genie. After rubbing the magic lamp, he managed to free the genie from his lifelong sentence. The grateful genie then granted him three special wishes.
We all know that Aladdin is nothing but a fairy tale. But wouldn’t it be awesome to have any of our wishes granted at the snap of the finger? If that ever happened to you, what would you wish for?
Now the 11-year-old you are about to meet is no genie, but what she’s doing is truly magical. Meet Ruby Kate Chitsey, the kind-hearted girl whose spreading joy – and granting wishes – in nursing homes.
It all started when Ruby’s mom brought her to work. Amanda runs a business where she assists patients at different nursing facilities in their hometown of Harrison, Arkansas. During one fateful visit, Ruby came across a lonely patient who was badly missing her dog.
The woman’s name was Pearl. She was gazing out her window and wondering when she could see her dog of 12 years again. Pearl’s story struck a chord in Ruby’s heart. The youngster then made it her mission to reach out to her mom’s elderly patients.
Retirement homes are known to be very expensive. Most families end up being overwhelmed by the financial expectations of caring for their elderly loved ones. New clothes, bed sheets, appliances, and even dog food are already considered a luxury.
So when Ruby heard of Pearl’s situation, it was no surprise that she met several other seniors going through the same thing. Despite her young age, Ruby resolved to make things better for the elderly residents. She visited them in their rooms, asking them, “If you could have three wishes, what would they be?”
Much to Ruby’s joy, the nursing home residents wished for simple things. One person wished to eat a hearty fast food meal, another wanted to visit the water park. One thing all the residents seemed longed for was a can of sausages! Ruby wanted to grant all their wishes – no matter how big or small it was.
So she launched a project called Three Wishes. Mom Amanda was so moved by her daughter’s selflessness, she decided to do her part and set up an online fundraising account. Together, they managed to raise $26,000 to buy hearing aids, shoes, and of course, lots and lots of sausages.
Ruby is truly an inspiring young lady! We wish her – and the Three Wishes Project – all the best.
