Colby Swift, a 19-year-old cowboy and fence painter from Midfield, Texas, got the biggest surprise of his life thus far during the Hollywood round of American Idol. And it shocked everyone in the room, including the judges.
There are two things Colby has never done before. One, he has never been to Hollywood. Two, he has never sung live in front of an audience before. Well, consider those done! Colby Swift is one of the American Idol contestants who made it to the Hollywood round and will now get more in-depth training from the show and the judges. Not bad for someone who has never taken a voice lesson in his life. "I'm just me, I'm Colby Swift. I ain't gotta be nobody else," he said during the Hollywood Week interviews.
Colby Swift wowed the judges and made them laugh during his audition, where he sang "Cast No Stones" by Cody Jinks. At first, they were worried because of his rawness. Katy said he was still inconsistent and need a lot of work. Lionel said he had a magnetism that made people look at him that can't be taught. Luke said he was so unpolished. But, in the end, Luke didn't want him to get away. Lionel said he loved what Colby was about and his presence. Katy said he had a lot of work to do but if he can take their advice and work on it, he's got something there. He got three yeses from the judges and sent him straight to Hollywood.
During Hollywood Week, he sang and played the guitar to "Before The Next Teardrop Falls" by Freddy Fender. Midway through the song, Judge Luke Bryan stops him and asks him to continue singing but without the guitar. Colby says yes and began to sing the Spanish verse a capella. Everybody was silent as they listened to this young country artist sing to the judges and to the audience, which included his dad, Justin. He got a standing ovation from everyone in the room when he finished his set. He had tears in his eyes as everyone cheered for him, he said during his interview, "to have Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Katy Perry stand up for me – that's a blessing, man...I'd never thought I'd do that."
But his biggest surprise, during Hollywood Week, would have to be when they called out the contestants again to announce if they made it through to the next round. Colby was in a line with four other hopefuls. Luke Bryan asked him to step forward, the only one who was asked. Luke Bryan paused and asked Colby what size shoes he wore. "What size shoe are you, Colby?" Luke asked.
It turns out Luke saw Colby's boots during his performance and noticed the holes in his boots. "Wouldn't be a 12D, would it?" Luke asked again. Colby said, "Whatever fits." Luke replied, "Well, I'm a 12D. Let's solve that little problem." Luke then took off his boots, ran to the stage, and handed the boots to Colby. While everybody cheered for Colby, Luke continued, "Those boots are made for walking to the next round," and announced that everyone in his line made it through to the next round.
Get some tissues ready when Luke hands his boots over to Colby!
