A National Geographic team led an expedition to the Aklan islands – in the middle of winter. The freezing sub-Antarctic temperatures made this expedition even more exhilarating as the team encountered a once in a lifetime experience. As Brian Skerry describes, the team was not expecting a personal encounter - let alone a face to face encounter with a 45-foot whale!
We all know how an unexpected encounter with an animal can be both exciting and fearful. I can just image the feelings of trembling and awe as the massive whale simply swam down to them at the ocean floor from above. With his own words, his heart was ‘pounding right out of his chest’ as the creature curiously encountered his assistant without threat and with curiosity and ease. It is simply amazing how such a great beast can be so graceful.
When animals do not feel threatened by an encounter with humans, they often want to draw themselves in to discover a creature different from them. As the great whale lingered just to look the ocean diver in the face, we know that something meaningful was exchanged between the two. This is a beautiful picture of the delightful relationship of man to the animal kingdom. What a marvelous creature.
