Good Samaritan Credited For Aiding Stranger At Airport

inspire by FaithTap Staff 3/15/2017

Most people are less than thrilled to have their flights delayed. But for one woman from Texas, she gladly postponed her flight in an effort to help another person in distress. Her actions have been applauded and her Facebook post about the experience has gone viral.

Shaina Murry was on the phone looking for her gate at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport when a man nearby caught her eye. The man, whose name she later learned was Will, was lying on the floor. She was alarmed, because he appeared to be in distress. She couldn't just walk by and leave him there, so she stopped.

"It was clear something was wrong, I just didn't know what. It seemed best after asking him a few questions to call for medical assistance."

Will told Shaina several times he was worried he was going to miss his flight while they waited for the airport's medical team to arrive. After speaking with Will for a bit, Shaina suspected he was autistic. That's when she changed her approach to caring for the stranger who had just stolen a piece of her heart in his time of need.

Knowing that she needed to reassure him and keep him as calm as she could during what likely was a frightening time, Shaina called Will's mom to tell her he wasn't feeling well. She told his mom that the medical team was on its way to check him out.

With Will's mom on the phone communicating with the medical team, it was determined that Will needed a bite to eat and something to drink. They hoped that would alleviate his symptoms. Shaina was glad to help, she shared in her Facebook post.

"They were worried he would get sick again and didn't know if he should fly."

To help Will out, even though they were strangers, Shaina worked with American Airlines and the medical team to change her flight and make sure Will ate. She stayed with him and they grabbed lunch at the airport. She also escorted him to his flight and made sure he boarded his plane just fine.

Will and his mother were so grateful for Shaina's kindness and assistance when everyone else had just walked past Will lying on the floor. Her compassion at a time when Will felt weak and scared would not go unrecognized. Thousands of people have shared and commented on Shaina's Facebook post about the experience.

Shaina was thrilled that American Airlines never charged her for the flight change, although she would have gladly paid, knowing she did what was right by stopping to help Will. The airline even called her while she and Will were eating lunch to notify her that Will's gate had changed, so she could steer him in the right direction. When they arrived at his gate, attendants checked on him and made sure he boarded safely, en route to see his mom for the holidays.

"Today was not at all what I pictured it to be. It has turned out so much better. I had an amazing lunch with a wonderful young man from Louisville, Kentucky. While I don't know him well, I know he has a heart of gold and a wonderful mother and sister who he loves very much. After texting with his mom- she loves him just as much."

Shaina credited American Airlines for their cooperation and professionalism during an emergency situation, as well as the medical team at the airport and the local police who assisted them. She said everyone needs help every once in a while, regardless of "disability, age or social status." She thanked Will in her Facebook post for making her day better. What a wonderful good Samaritan and happy ending to their story!
