Military Mom On A Mission To Solve A Teddy Bear Mystery

When Amanda Fields' daughter received a special toy from her neighbor, she thought nothing of it. The kind neighbor mentioned that the stuffed animal was purchased at a thrift shop, and six-year-old Amaya was thrilled to be the new owner.
It wasn't until the family dog stepped on the toy, that Amanda realized that it had to go. A sound emitted from the bear, and she knew right away that something was hidden inside.
Amaya rushed over to her mother to show her the bear, and pointed out that there was something hard hidden in the stuffing. It wasn't until Amanda inspected the toy further that her heard dropped.
When they inspected the bear further, what they heard broke Amanda's heart. It turns out that the teddy bear had a voice box in it that said:
"Merry Christmas from Afghanistan. Daddy misses you and misses you. I want to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I'll see you soon and I love you."
As a military wife herself, the Indiana mom knows how direly important cherished mementos of loved ones serving in the military happen to be to their families, especially for little ones who have a parent stationed far from home. So when Amanda discovered a special teddy bear sent by a soldier, she set out on her own mission.
Amanda's own husband and her five children's dad recently returned from his fourth deployment as a Marine, so this message hit home for her. Amanda took to Facebook to share her discovery and try to find the bear's rightful owner, a child somewhere who likely was missing his special bear. Amanda believes the bear was accidentally donated.
The case of the missing teddy bear has gone viral with a shocking number of people sharing her story. News stations have even picked it up in the hopes of helping Amanda find the bear's home.
Meanwhile, Amanda contacted the bear's manufacturer but was told that those types of bears are regularly donated and shipped to multiple places for soldiers to use. The bears are not tagged in any way and it would be impossible to trace the bear back to its owner.
There also is a non-profit organization that buys those bears in bulk and sends them to soldiers overseas to record a message and send back home to their families, Amanda was told. But Amanda wasn't about to stop searching, since she understands firsthand how difficult it can be as a military family split up during a deployment.
"We know how hard it is for Dad to be away. We hold on to every single word, message and gift during his deployments. These sentiments and the sound of Daddy's voice may be the one thing getting a child through their father's deployment."
Amanda said she hopes the soldier whose voice is buried in the bear has made it home safely from his deployment and is enjoying time with his family, so his voice is live and in person, instead of recorded in the missing bear.
The family also expressed their heartfelt thanks to the mystery soldier for his service and the sacrifices he and his family have made fighting for America's freedom. We pray for our soldiers' safety and for their families back home. We also hope this special bear finds his way back home.
