Romy McCloskey is a costume designer and embroiderer from Texas. Through her business Faden Design Studios, she works on everything from historical replicas to original designs for TV, film and theater.
She never thought that she would use her skills to save the life of one of nature's most beautiful creatures.
Romy has always had a special connection with butterflies. She explained on Facebook that she started raising and releasing the insects by accident after finding a couple of caterpillars on a milkweed plant in her yard.
"I had no idea what to do, other than to keep them in a glass tank and feed them, and wait. Little did I know there was much more involved."
Her patient's upper and lower wings were badly damaged. He was just three days old and had sustained the injury while pupating. Romy decided to tack on some wings from a female butterfly that had passed away the week prior. Romy noted:
"My heart broke because I thought she hadn't gotten to fulfill her purpose in this world because she hadn't gotten to fly outside. Funny how life shows you there's a plan for everything~ She has given a wonderful gift of flight to this little guy and gotten her chance to fly outside too!"
