Mom has watched her newborn and cat get used to each other over a period of weeks. First, the cat named Mushy was nervous around Leo and didn't know how to act when he was near. But as Mushy inched closer over the weeks, Leo got more and more comfortable too.
Then, one day, Mom looked over and saw her son reach over for Mushy. Would this small act be met with resistance from the cat? Or would it go well?
Fortunately, she was able to reach her camera in time to capture this moment forever!
Thankfully, Mushy loved being pet by Leo and the two sat there and cuddled for several minutes! This was the best possible outcome of Leo's first cuddle attempt. Mom hurried over to the camera so she could capture this moment on film!
Now, Leo and Mushy are the best of friends and snuggle all of the time! Mushy follows Leo everywhere he goes - it's clear they have years of adventuring and napping ahead!
While some people have a problem with cats, Mom knows Mushy is the perfect companion for her son.
There's a number of important reasons why cats are great for little ones. According to an interview on the Purina website with Aaron Katcher, M.D., a professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, having a pet around children can have a variety of great benefits.
"Because [humans] evolved solving problems about animals, animals have the power to entrain our attention. And when we are around animals, we become more joyous, communicative, expressive, and calm."
The page goes on to explain the benefit of introducing children to cats is proven. They say cats help children learn to empathize with others, they are great for children coping with trauma, are wonderful for teaching responsibilities and certain studies have concluded that children with cats even tend to be smarter!
No matter the reason Mom brought Mushy into the house, it seems to have suited Leo well!
