Foster Son's 5-Word Confession Makes Mom's Heart Drop

It may seem like foster parents have it "easy" since the children they're caring for are usually only in their lives for a short time. However, just the exact opposite is true - foster parents are tasked with an enormous responsibility in providing a safe haven for extremely vulnerable kids.
These poor kids often come from a broken home, and sometimes they've even suffered a life of abuse or neglect. When a caring foster hero steps in to save the day, they're taking a risk, especially since no one really knows what's been brewing underneath the surface. The child could suddenly explode with outbursts of aggression, or maybe they'll become totally withdrawn and emotionless.
Deborah Sweet's foster son didn't appear to be any of those things when she first took him into her home. Over the past 186 days, Deborah has been caring for a very special 3-year-old and by all outward appearances he was a very happy kid. But, that was the day he finally made a chilling confession, and it's also when mom's heart sank into the depths of her soul.
Deborah is a Foster Parent Ambassador in Massachusetts, which is another way of saying that she has a lot of experience and supports other foster parents in their new roles. On her "Because I Stay" Facebook page, Deborah said:
"For over ten years, a lifetime really, we have welcomed children into our family in need of a safe place to land. Our house is loud and fun and scheduled and chaotic and perfectly imperfect. We are a foster family."
However, even the most experienced parents on the planet can be thrown a curveball that they don't know how to deal with. Sometimes you just can't throw the ball back and ask for a new one, especially when a child's welfare is at stake.
Deborah explained that one night she was having a fun dance party while making dinner. The whole family was laughing, singing, and shaking their bodies to the rhythm of the music, and the boy was totally happy. Until he wasn't.
"And then all of a sudden he was sad. I missed him calling my name. I was still caught up in his joy. I felt the tug on my sleeve and looked down to find him standing motionless. His mouth was moving but I couldn't make out his words. His quiet body in the noisy room caught me off guard."
Sadly, that wasn't the only thing that caught this loving mom off guard. His heartbreaking confession seemed to come out of the blue, and it crushed her spirits when she finally understood the deeper meaning behind his words.
"I miss my other daddy."
Witnessing the pain and loss in his eyes was nearly impossible for Deborah to bear, but it was something this poor kid had been keeping to himself all this time and he could no longer keep it hidden inside.

Mom forgot all about dinner, and sat there with her little boy on the kitchen floor, where they let their guards down in the heavy silence. Their new connection to one another met in a place of grief, but her son wasn't alone, as they felt the sadness together.
"186 days in my care. That's how long it took this little boy to find the courage to tell me what had undoubtedly been woven through all of his days and nights in our home. 186 days is a giant amount of time in the life of a three year old. The loss of a primary caregiver is a primal wound. There is no remedy. There is no distraction. There is no bandaid or central location to kiss the booboo and move on. There is no moving on."
Sometimes there's no easy fix, but there's always a loving embrace. After five or ten minutes, which seemed like an eternity, it was the little boy's next 5-word confession that made the bittersweet moment come full circle. As the music played on, their hearts moved from pain to joy when he said - "This is the love song."
