When an elderly woman needed to run into a West Virginia Walmart, she decided to leave her two small dogs behind in her vehicle with the air conditioning running. But she never would have guessed what her two dogs named Peppi and Sadie would do when left alone.
Fatima Rowe, the dogs’ owner, needed to go shopping, but didn’t want her dogs to get hot while she was in the store. She wasn’t sure how long she’d be gone. So she parked her Crown Victoria near the front of the store, left the windows up, the car running and the air conditioning on, so the dogs could stay cool.
Not long after Fatima headed into the store, there was something odd unraveling in the parking lot. As people were popping in and out of the store, they noticed Fatima’s Crown Victoria rolling slowly toward the building. One person told police officers who responded to the incident that it looked as if the “little brown dog,” Sadie, was driving with her paws up on the steering wheel.
The Crown Victoria has a gear shift on the side of the steering wheel column. If bumped, it could pop out of gear, since older models don’t require a motorist to push on the brake pedal to shift gears. Officers on the scene said it appeared as if one of the dogs had done just that–bumped the gear shift out of park.
So apparently Peppi and Sadie decided to go on a joy ride in the Walmart parking lot while Fatima shopped. When a Walmart employee went into the store to report the incident, Fatima was paged to the front of the store. She couldn’t believe her dogs had really done what everyone said they did.
“I didn’t know what was going on. I couldn’t believe that they had done it.”
Fatima told WSAZ-TV reporters that she suspected Peppi was the culprit. A terrier, Peppi loves to jump and likely was the one who bumped the gear shift. After the vehicle gently ran into the front of the Walmart store and people approached the vehicle, Peppi also managed to roll down the electric window and hop out.
“He’s the rambunctious one.”
Does this look like the face of a guilty dog? You be the judge!

Fortunately, there was minimal damage to both the store and Fatima’s vehicle. The officer who responded to the 911 emergency call allowed Fatima to head on home with her dogs. But this time, they didn’t drive.
